Wizards of Welding – Why welding matters

How Fortaco welding engineers see the invisible and deliver world-class welding to their customers

Welding is a bit of wizardry. Welding melts metal and literally alters a material’s metallurgical properties. The microstructure changes. The material’s hardness changes. A weld which appears to be sound, may not necessarily meet standards.

Fortaco’s plant in Kalajoki produces 7,000 tons of welded structure each year for applications where there is no margin for error. Some customers have strict requirements concerning the value of welding. For example, in some cases welding costs are not allowed to exceed one percent of the total value of an end product. That one percent, however, is critical to the success of the product. A steel structure which supports a boiler atop a 50-meter building simply may not fail. Disaster would follow.
