When robots rule?
This whitepaper describes potential scenarios for the future of cabin business related to the development of AI and autonomous vehicles. It is addressing not only development of AI itself, but also problems with protection of sensors that will replace human senses. This is the challenge which is somewhat not prioritized by many companies, but we expect it to be one of the main challenges once the autonomous vehicle will hit the mass market.
An operator often comprises 25 to 50 percent of a vehicle’s operating costs. In some instances, operator costs exceed the equipment’s cost over a machine’s lifetime. Given that fact, and considering the megatrends of artificial intelligence and the electrification of vehicles, it’s only natural to entertain the notion of autonomous cranes shuffling sea containers from yard to yard according to dazzlingly complicated logistics schedules. Or it’s tempting to imagine robot-driven loaders racing through narrow mine tunnels at breakneck speed without ever scraping a wall.
To make a vehicle truly autonomous will require awesome computing power coupled with hundreds of sensors but there are of course areas in off-highway that can be automated. The challenge comes when a machine must interact with human so we think that perhaps the most dramatic change in cabins will come about in the way we think of them.
